Today Reuters
reported that Japanese engineers are considering the "Chernobyl Option" as a last resort. This option,
suggested by Japanese American physicist Michio Kaku, would involve burying the nuclear facility in sand and concrete to prevent a catastrophic radiation release:
This is what the Soviets did in 1986, calling out the Red Air Force and sandbagging the reactor with over 5,000 tons of concrete and sand.
